Accelerating UNESA's Transformation: From 'ANSIA' AI Assistant to a Technology-Based Green Campus
Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) is aggressively advancing its transformation on two main pillars: the digitalization of academic services and the development of a sustainable (smart eco campus). Through a series of new platform launches and technology-based green initiatives, UNESA is solidifying its position as an adaptive and innovative university in 2025.
The most significant development comes from the Directorate of Digital Learning Innovation (DIPD), which has changed the face of academic services. The culmination was the launch of the SIDIA Mobile application in July 2025, which functions as a "super-app" for students and lecturers.
“SIDIA Mobile is a one-stop solution. All academic needs, from Study Plan Cards (KRS), Study Result Cards (KHS), class schedules, to attendance, are now in one hand,” said Dr. Alim Sumarno, M.Pd., Director of Digital Learning Innovation at UNESA.
This application not only facilitates students but also integrates lecturers. The latest features released in August and September 2025 allow lecturers to take class attendance in real-time and monitor their attendance summaries directly from the app, supporting administrative efficiency.
Complementing this digital ecosystem, UNESA also launched ANSIA (AI Assistant) in early 2025. This artificial intelligence-based virtual assistant is designed to be an interactive learning companion, helping students and lecturers access academic information more quickly and personally.
Parallel to Smart Campus: ‘Eco Campus’ Initiative Accelerated
Not only in cyberspace, UNESA’s transformation also touches physical and environmental aspects through the Smart Eco Campus Directorate. In the past few weeks of October 2025, this directorate has been actively promoting green campus initiatives.
Recently, UNESA’s Faculty of Food Resilience (FKP) became a pioneer by designing a greening program for campus 3 with various productive fruit trees such as oranges, guavas, and mangoes. This initiative aims to turn the campus into a living laboratory while supporting food resilience.
Furthermore, on October 10, 2025, UNESA held the first-ever Eco-Campus Ambassador Election. “These ambassadors are expected to become agents of change to realize a green and sustainable campus, as well as prepare UNESA for the UI GreenMetric ranking,” explained Prof. Dr. Drs. Abdul Rachman Syam Tuasikal, M.Pd., Director of Smart Eco Campus.
On the research side, UNESA's innovation focuses on technology that has a direct impact on society. A research team from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) continues to develop the "Dewo" Robot Team to compete in the 2025 Indonesian Flying Robot Contest (KRTI).
Moreover, a UNESA research team has also successfully developed an Android-based tsunami early warning application specifically designed to be disability-friendly. This innovation demonstrates UNESA's commitment to utilizing technology for inclusivity and humanity.
With the massive integration of digital services through SIDIA and ANSIA, as well as a strong commitment to environmental sustainability through the Smart Eco Campus initiative, UNESA proves that technological development on campus must go hand-in-hand with digital efficiency and ecological responsibility.
